It depends on if you count my batches with the Mr. Beer kit.

Once I did my first real extract batch, I knew that I was on to something.  The most important thing is that you like the beer.  That's when I deem it good.

I was lucky.  My first batch was a porter from a kit put together by Jess at Alternative Beverage here in Charlotte.  It was extract with specialty grains.  My first try, the beer came out awesome.  I've brewed several bad batches since then, but the first one was really good.-- Steve

I voted first batch.  The first batch I made was pretty good.  Then 2 undrinkable batches.  Been all good since then tho.  I have had an issue with brett getting into some of my batches that weren't supposed to have it, but what the hell.  I still like them.

My very first batch back in 1972 used Blue Ribbon Malt and bread yeast and involved very questionable sanitation procedures.  An abosolute total disaster!

Bottle gushers with foul smelling, vile tasting crap dripping off the ceilings!
My second brew, 30 years later, a brown ale kit that my LHBS makes up in house, turned out good.  It wasn't until 8-10 months later (3 or 4 more brews) when I made the jump to all grain, that I began to produce beers approaching great.  Out of the 35-40 batches to date I have only had 2 or 3 batches of "dumpenbrau", and those were due to stupid mistakes on my part.

First one was crap.  Good after that.Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors -- and miss.

Sorry, I posted 5+ because everytime I brew I raise the standard on good beer.  Honestly, my second batch was pretty good, but it just keeps getting better, just when I think I have brewed my best, I tap the next keg.  Love this hobby!Nate

I think you've touched on an important point. I thought my first batch was the greatest beer in the world. If I tasted it now, 12 years later I probably would think it was crap. Just imagine how many off flavors you could identify in those early brews now.

I voted first time, because "good" beer is anything better than the swill they serve you at most places.  My Poker Buddies were QUITE impressed, even BEFORE they were drunk.
It was last September, so I'm no Veteran.  It was B3's Mild Brown with specialty grains.  I'm doing all grain now and they mostly just keep getting better.  I've just completed my sweet 16th...

I still have the instructions from my first brew.  1992, It was a Munton & Fison "Premium" extract.  It calls for 4 1/2 cups of corn sugar.  It also gives detailed instructions regarding the amount of water to use depending on if you wanted to make 10 six packs or 6 six packs.  Looking at my records, I noted an O.G. of 1.014.  Final was 1.006.  Tasted like shit.  My second try was a marzen partial mash.  It was absolutley wonderful.  That was the beer that hooked me on the sport.
