I can get bags of durum wheat for $10 and feed barely for less. Are the yield and product quality from these any good? I'm wondering if and how much I should get for winter projects.
What's been your experience with these?
Could make vodka and Irish whiskey.
My only concern with feed barley is if it was desiccated.

I'd start with a bag of each.
Most likely the barley won't germinate, but the wheat will.

I’ve malted feed barley several times.  $17 for a 50 pound earlier this year. Good stuff from a grain co-op, not sure about a pkace like Tractor Supply ...

The only feed barley I can get locally, has been dried so much it won't germinate.
The Old man at the feed store said it's dried that way to kill off the weevils.

Sure these will make a good drop.  Just get some enzymes or some malt to convert these.
Irish whiskey traditionally uses a large share of unmalted barley.

I think these are from a farmer so might not be dried.
Good price though so should be good for trying things.

you'd be surprised how much booze you get from grain. 1.5kg/bottle of finished product is a good goal. you'll get more booze than that, i'm saying after cuts.I finally quit drinking for good.
now i drink for evil.

Nice. Is a pure wheat mash challenging?

Not in my experience. I've done a whisky with unmalted wheat and enzymes (And a little flaked oats for mouthfeel). And a neutral using unmalted wheat and Yellow Label yeast. Both turned out great and were a reasonable yield. The early and late hearts on the neutral had some really interesting flavours."I have a potstill that smears like a fresh plowed coon on the highway" - Jimbo

I’ve pressed in my wine press. But I’m thinking of trying putting the grain in the basket in my electric beer brewer. I just need to modify the lid by drilling a hole and adding a threaded adapter for tri clamps. Then get a column for it. Got the idea from another thread on this forum.

Got the idea from another thread on this forum. That'll be easier.  I use a mop bucket with a wringer. I load grains into a mesh bag and wring them. 55lbs of grains takes about 10-15mins to wring out.Ut Alii Vivant!!!!
