Been lurking for a few years reading . Trying to figure out if this is for me and if initial investment justified. Yes, start slow and build modular. Unfortunately, our dollar adds 30% cost to everything as just about all equipment is in US dollars (from US or China), Canadian resellers are in same position.

Welcome neighbor.

the more you keep to yourself the more "free" you will be and the more you will git away with.

Welcome to HD
from a fellow canuck from northern Ontario..
There are a fellow members from your area..
How are your building skills.. much cheaper to built and lots more fun to the hobby..  and it's not the pricing of equipment that needs answering first, it's what do intent to make/drink..
Enjoy the journey

welcome in.
the start up costs can add up if you get crazy, but you'll save about 99% of the price of a quality bottle of whisky on every bottle you make once you get your legs under you.
happy reading!I finally quit drinking for good.
now i drink for evil.

Thanks for the welcome and replies. Did wine at home for many years from juice, then kinda got bored.  Looked at building versus buying for sometime, it's a toss up from cost perspective once I purchase the additional tools/supplies . If I decide to purchase I am leaning towards a modular POT still type setup that I can customize as needed, no urge for column still setup at the moment.

Howdy PGB, Yes, modular is the way to go, either as a build or buy. There are lots of avenues to explore. Welcome!

Start small and get going early.   I have spent far too long building stills and far too little distilling.
I have enjoyed the learning that comes with obsessing over every little bit but a small pot still can be had for cheap and get you started early instead of waiting ages and spending thousands to discover you have no interest.

Welcome from out west!  You can spend lot of money building a modular before you even produce a drop, or learn some of the basics. like tiramisu said start small and get a few runs in on a cheap pot or build a beer keg boka with some 2" copper if you are handy... there are a lot of variables removed and skill you can develop just learning how to make a neutral consistently when starting out.
